Color And Light, July 14, 2022. Off To See The Refugee Children at Bishop Bibbons, Our New Base

by Jon Katz

We’re off to Bishop Gibbons High School in Schenectady to see the new school, help Sue Celebrate her art rooms, meet the new principal and meet with some of the refugee children. Maria and Zinnia are coming too.

I ran out to see my garden and took a few photos I want to share with you; and thank you for all the good words about my flower photography. They don’t need much explanation.

We’ll be back in the early afternoon. This is an exciting trip for us, a reunion and re-christening of our commitment to these children and the refugee idea. The kids want to see Zinnia, and the  Bishop Gibbons refugee students want to meet her. She’s a lot more famous than I am.

We also hope to meet some Afghan and Ukrainian refugee children.

The statue of the mysterious saint is a beautiful spiritual backdrop for the poppies.

Another new Zinnia

The Nasturtiums are thriving and well

The gladiolas are mystical, mysterious, and beautiful. Nature is the best artist.

    1. That you for that comparison, Patsy, I would it could be true but I am grateful to you for saying it…

    1. Thanks Florence, it was a terrific visit, I’ll post and write about it later this afternoon..I’m very psyched about it…

  1. With your gladiola photos you’re moving into the Georgia O’Keeffe territory of her Jimson Weed Flower paintings. “When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.”

      1. That was O’Keeffe explaining herself! I once sent this on to Maria, because I had finally figured out that Jimson Weed is not as big as O’Keeffe painted it, but rather about the size of the palm of your hand! O’Keeffe explained that “If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it no one would see what I see because I would paint it small like the flower is small. So I said to myself … I’ll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it…” And this: “[N]obody sees a flower — really — it is so small — we haven’t time — and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.” So … thank you for “making” us take the time to really see your flowers.

  2. I wasn’t going to bug you, but with the photo of the gladiola I wanted to say move over Georgia O’Keeffe. Obviously from the comments others recognized the comparison.

  3. Whether or not you are channeling your inner Georgia O’Keeffe with your Leica…that first photo is just beautiful!!

    1. I love being compared to Georgia, I can’t say it’s comparable to her, but it’s lovely to hear..

  4. I am loving those poppies, and need to get some back into my flower beds. And, ditto on the O’Keefe comparisons here. I’ve been a fan of hers for decades, and am seeing some stunning likenesses in your work, too. I’ve often tried to emulate her in my own floral shots.
