Can You Meditate And Rub A Cat’s Head At The Same Time? Yes, If You Are Maria (Happy Holiday!)

by Jon Katz

If you are Maria, yes, it’s no problem at all. In the summer, Maria has taken to sitting outside for a few minutes to meditate and gather herself for the day. She has had a rough week, as she wrote about on her blog.

Minnie, our three legged ex-feral barn cat, likes this new routine, she curls up against Maria’s back and Maria, who is a gymnast at heart, reaches around and rubs the purring cat (she’s 15 years old, we think) at the same time.

I haven’t taught this method in my meditation class, but I see that it works. It is calming and grounding.

Happy Fourth Of July.I have a lot to write and share today. First I’m going to have breakfast and meditate myself. I could use it also.

  1. Just a thought: I find my cats’ purring calming. It helps me get my mind out of the occasional swamp. I recommend feline meditation — or meditation with a cat — to anyone.
