After I dropped Maria off at the Bennington Protest against the Supreme Court Ruling, I got my camera out and wandered a bit looking for the one photo that would capture what was happening.
I found it.
A young woman in a bright red dress was standing on a street corner with a bullhorn shouting out prompts and chants. (“What Do We Want? Rights! When Do We Want Them! Now!)
Something about her standing alone in front of that crowd at a busy intersection. Some of the cars and trucks were honking their support, others were shouting insults.
I don’t know here, didn’t speak to her. I know nothing about her. But she gave me both hope and inspiration. Strong women are on the move everywhere.
This young woman was strong, poised, and committed.
She took all of it in stride. She had a proud and determined look about her, and I felt that I was looking at the future. In fact, I called the photo “future,” because that is what it is.
It’s my picture of the week.
I feel a little better and more hopeful after reading Michelle Obama’s response on Instagram to the overturning of Roe v Wade. One sentence in particular stood out for me – “The more we allow pessimism to push us further into helplessness, the less we will be empowered to help create the kind of country we want to live in.” Kudos to Maria and to the young woman in the red dress for not being afraid to speak their truth.
“See the woman with the red dress on. She can do the Birdland all night long.”
From “What I Say” as song by the late Ray Charles. .
Nice..
I am a Christian and am so grateful that Roe v Wade was removed from our constitution . Give God all the glory for putting an end to murdering unborn babies’
