Amish Donuts And Cookies (And Jam!)

by Jon Katz

With Spring, the Millers, my Amish neighbors,  are cranking out lots of donuts and cookies again.

I was reminded of this yesterday by Moise himself.

I pulled into Stewart’s, the local convenience store, yesterday afternoon and ran into Barbara and Moise, who had come to town shopping.

Both came rushing over to my car; I felt the connection with Moise come right back.

We yakked for a long time; he told me what he was planting and how the plowing goes. He is planting several new crops. He is always planning something.

He asked me if it was still okay to put a sign up for his good and vegetable stand on the end of our South pasture so people could find the shed more quickly.

I love Barbara and asked her if it was all right if I dropped fresh flowers in a glass jar to her every week once my garden got rolling.

She beamed (she loves flowers), “sure, that would be very nice,” she said. Good, I said, I will have plenty of beautiful flowers.

I was happy to see both of them, and I could tell they were very pleased to run into me.

I said sure; it would be OK to put up a food stand sign on the edge of our farm.

Moise told me they were making lots of donuts, but sales were down slightly from last year. Well, I said I might mention the donuts on my blog again; I haven’t mentioned them this year.

I was joking, but I could see him thinking about it, and he smiled.

He smiled and nodded.

I knew he couldn’t ask me to promote their donuts, but I could tell he wouldn’t mind. I warned him there might be a photo or two of the shed, and he smiled and nodded.

“I know you are touchy about pictures,” and he smiled and took off his had to get more relaxed, “oh Jonnie, you know we are friends.”

Yes, I do. Amish donuts are here, and in force.

  1. What a lovely interaction that was. And he called you Jonnie..very endearing really…
    Made me smile

  2. “Oh Jonnie, you know we are friends.” That sums it up nicely. A changed but still enduring friendship.

    1. Moise lives in Cambridge on Route 22, two houses South of Lauderdale Lake, four or five miles out of Cambridge Center. Shed is on the right going North.

    1. Sounds pretty close, but every human is different and has different way of doing things, Amish or English

  3. Makes me happy to see that Moise and Barbara are back in your life. A chance meeting – aren’t they the best?
