Coming Back To Life, The Nasturtium Memorial Garden

by Jon Katz

My memorial garden for the children killed in schools is bouncing back to life. Several new buds have appeared, this one began to open up this morning.

The garden – all Nasturtiums – is in a small raised garden bed, it is meant to keep me from forgetting the children killed in their school rooms while the grown-ups wring their hands, say prayers,  and forget.

I don’t want to forget them. The garden will remind me.

  1. I wish I could forget. The young man who committed this heinous act needed help long before this, but he didn’t get it. And now his life is over. Trump said we need to arm teachers. Assault weapons are powerful lethal instruments. I have serious doubts that a handgun would stand much of a chance against these death instruments. And now we are suppose to turn our educators into law enforcement. In our messed up society teachers already are serving as psychologists which distracts from their main duty as educators. Common sense people know there can’t be loaded weapons in a classroom where children are. When an eighteen-year-old buys 2 (not one) assault weapons the seller
should have had red flags flashing in front of him. Background checks, age limits, more school security are only part of the answer. Get these damn death machines off the shelves. Who needs a weapon like this accept the military!!!!!
