When a donkey loves you, they show it by tolerating you. When a donkey does not love you, you know it right away.
Maria knows how to start the day. She goes into the pasture every morning to ensure the animals are okay, have enough food and water, and clean the barn.
I am her helper. She is in bliss. Before she leaves, she always leans over to scratch the donkeys, hugs them, brushes them, or kisses them on their soft noses. They show their love by waiting for her and accepting her love.
They demand it; if she’s taking too much time to get to them, she gets a nose in the butt. Donkeys rarely show emotion, but their souls are soft and loving.
Everything has to be their idea.
I heard a fascinating interview with a woman in BC who employs donkeys and art in wellness and therapy. She has had donkeys for many years and her description of working with them parallels much of what you have written.
