Experimenting With Breakfast: A New Smoothie, A Bulgar Wheat Cup

by Jon Katz

I’m having fun experimenting with my breakfasts.

I’ve been making a different smoothie each morning this week, trying different things and combinations. I’m also trying foreign wheat and grains to go with lunch and dinner. Last week it was Forro; this morning, it was Bulgar Wheat; this may be my favorite.

I think the smoothie I made this morning was the best so far, both in terms of taste and health. I put in a sliced apple, one half of a banana, a half cup of oat milk, three spoonfuls of nonfat yogurt, a small scoop of protein powder, some almond flakes, a handful of raisins, a handful of chickpeas, a tablespoon of bulgar wheat, a fistful of blueberries, three strawberries, and a small carrot.

It tasted great. Our blender is powerful and quick.

That’s what I love about smoothies, I can use my imagination and try different – and healthy – things. I think this smoothie might be the healthiest breakfast I ever had. And it tasted great.

I put all these ingredients in the blender and had enough for breakfast and lunch. They are filling and nourishing. I’m not the least bit hungry.

I threw in a Katzian twist to try out a thought I’ve had.

I put a cup of bulgar wheat into a stove pot, added a half teaspoon of vegetable broth and a teaspoon of salt, and brought a cup of oat milk and a half cup of water to a boil.

I let the wheat simmer for 12 minutes, and I thought it was the best-tasting wheat I’ve made so far.

I got a tiny cup out of the closet, put in the cooked bulgar cereal, added almond flakes and raisins (delicious food for people with diabetes in small amounts), and pine nuts.

The wheat was still warm and mixed with the flakes and rains; it had an authentic flavor. I ate it alongside the smoothie.

I think this will join my regular repertoire. Maria loved it also. She doesn’t eat smoothies for breakfast, but I always leave her some of the smoothies in a small cup, she has it for dessert.

I also had a small cup of tomato juice, something I drink every morning with breakfast.

I loved this breakfast, and I could feel the energy and nourishment. Healthy food feels good; it goes down quickly and rarely feels heavy or leaden. I sometimes have fitness bread, but I’ve lost my appetite for bread and anything processed, fried, or sweet.

I don’t want it. I can feel my body changing as I learn to change my relationship with food. Natural food, fish, vegetables, fruit, and grains. Those are my boundaries.

As many of you know, Cooking is creative, but I never thought of it that way until recently. I don’t look around for recipes; I like to experiment myself.

People are writing me urging me to write a cookbook, but I am nowhere near that good yet, and besides, the blog is my book. I don’t need to register another one.

The real cooks know a lot more than I will ever know.

I am also very humble about my cooking. I know very little about food and don’t want to represent myself. If you want to read somebody who really knows food, check out my friend Julz Iron’s blog, JulzStyle.

  1. Beware the writing of a cookbook! A friend of mine did so some years ago and while it was a big success (“Kitchen in The Hills”) she wondered how she ever got it done. It was the quantities and the measurements that took so long to get down as well as step by step instructions. She had not realized how precise everything had to be but her editor soon told her!

    1. I’m laughing at the question, David. I appreciate your concern, but I’m not looking for another Mother. The one I had was trouble enough. You worry about your carbs and I’ll worry about mine. Deal?

    1. I can’t answer you, Eliza, it’s not happening to anyone else I know of, it has to be on your end, or a glitch that sometimes occurs. It’s not happening to me.

  2. Jon and Eliza,

I find that occasionally I get that same message. While annoying, I try to ignore it. Sometimes the message never appears again. And sometimes it does. Definitely a glitch.

    1. I’m guessing it does happen to people once in awhile, although there isn’t much I can do about it, I’d just post the double message, it won’t do any harm.
