Sweet Day First Planting For 2022 In My Garden Beds (I’m Eating Onions Now)

by Jon Katz

Maria and I got up early this morning. We had breakfast out (a veggie omelet for me with a small fruit cup and one piece of dry wheat toast). We got two rolls of turkey wire and some staples and she’ll start work on the fence later today.

I’ve got to go food shopping this afternoon, but I paused to plant some perennials in two of my three garden beds.

I was pleased to go out in this nearly freezing day and plant two perennials – Tickseed and Blue Bellflower – in my raised garden beds.

There was a frost last night, and another one is predicted for tonight, but these two perennials can handle it. To be on the safe side, I’ll hold off planting the floral bulbs for a week or two. I learned my lesson last year.

The Bluebells, upfront, plenty of water and lots of donkey manure and great soil. Tickseed in the rear of a different bed; this flower grows tall.

I love having Zinnia as a dog. She is happy to do everything we do, and she is never more comfortable than when she is sitting alongside me while I do chores. For someone who works alone, this is a special gift.

She is the sweetest of creatures.

I have a great mix of seeds and ideas for the three garden beds when it’s a little safer, weather-wise. My garden advisers tell me bulbs will be fine once it stops going below freezing at night., but I’ll wait for a few weeks before planting seeds.

So I have recently done two things I’ve never done before – plant perennials in my own garden in late April and eating all of the onions served in my salads in two restaurants.

Trying new things has become a hobby of mine. I had no idea onions could taste good.
