Saturday, Planting Begins In My Garden Beds

by Jon Katz

I’m excited. Saturday begins planting season for me as it relates to my three raised garden beds ready to go to work. It’s too early for most flowers – Memorial Day is the recommended planting day for most flowers.

But the two I bought – Zagreb Tickseed on the left and Rapido Blue Bellflower on the right are getting planted on tomorrow, both are hardy perennials that bloom for long periods in the summer and into the fall.

The tickseed sprouts small yellow daisy-like flowers and the Bellflower plant has soft purplish flowers. I’m planting some other bulbs in a few weeks, but these two will kick off the garden.

Both will subsist on daily watering, and rich, nutritious donkey manure as well as good topsoil.

Photos on Saturday.

  1. I planted a ticksee last year. It’s a beautiful little shrub. It just started new growth this week. I have sunflowers in jiffy pots to be planted soon in the “sweet spots” around the garden. I also planted Janis Joplin roses out front, with a Paint It Black lily that I’ll plant near the tickseed today.
