Garden Beds Liberated, Edging Towards Spring

by Jon Katz

I removed the cardboard covering and the bricks to keep the wind at bay. The soil looks great, moist, rich (donkey manure), and a bit moldy.

The beds needed some sun and air. I did my first planting, about a dozen onions, both for eating and aerating the soil to help out the incoming flowers.

The onion roots go deep and they don’t mind cold weather. I’m collecting an amazing variety of flowers, seeds, and bulbs, more than I have room for.

But I believe garden beds will yield some beautiful flowers It’s a beautiful day up here. In a couple of hours, we’ll head out to go see the movie “Cyrano,” it looks like fun.
