If Love Prevails, the Ukraine Will Bloom Again: The Refugee Children Of Bishop Maginn Come Out For Peace

by Jon Katz

The students at Bishop Maginn High School, most of them refugees, came out today to stand with Ukraine.

They painted sunflowers, the Ukraine National Flower, on the concrete patio in front of the school. They raised $400 (much sent by the Army Of Good) and sold Sunflower lapel pins, and used chalk to paint sunflowers all over the patio.

It was a beautiful, powerful, and moving thing to see.

I don’t quite have words for it; these children know exactly what the children of Ukraine are going through, and rather than complain, they offer their hearts and love to these new victims of a world that sometimes can’t stop being cruel.

Being with them was an affirmation of the best of us, and this morning, we also learned that the Army Of Good had raised $7,000 so these children could have their prom, the school’s last, and were not forgotten. They are very grateful. I’ll be attending their meeting next week to talk about how they want to spend the money.

I’m hard-pressed to think of a more moving few hours in my memory. Sue Silverstein struck again.

I took many photos that tell the story better than I can; I’ll just put them up. I didn’t have time to write down everyone’s correct names, and rather than mess them up, I’ll post them. They very much speak for themselves; I was very grateful to be a photographer today. Children may just yet save the world.

Kudos to Sue, and thanks to her Blessed Mother. There is hope and light in the world. Love lives and is contagious.

These Bishop Maginn students understand pain and suffering in a way I have never experienced. I learn every time I speak with them.

I’ll post some photos now and some tomorrow morning. I want to get the best ones up; they should be seen, color and black and white.

No one had to tell these students what to do or what sunflowers mean

The day was about friendship and feeling.

Some worked quietly and privately; there was feeling and love all over the patio.
