The Mansion: Memory Boxes For Memory Care. Knowing Where You Live

by Jon Katz

A few months ago, we ( Army Of Good) purchased a dozen memory boxes for the Mansion’s Memory Care Unit.

I was excited to purchase these special boxes, created for residents with dementia. Some of the most powerful things I see at the Mansion are the people who are losing their memories and fighting so hard to re-connect to them.

Memory is everything to them, without it, they lose track of who they are. Memory boxes can help.

I think the work in Memory Care is some of the most important work that we do. The puzzles, books, and special games we have been purchasing are all designed to promote memory and restore it if possible.

The boxes are filled with personal items from the residents’ lives, objects and memories, thought to be lost, that can stimulate memory and recreate a sense of home..

In the case of the Mansion, the idea was to make one for each of the Memory Care residents and put them up by the doors to their room.

The hope is that they will recognize some of the items and come to know that this is their new home, this is where they live.

The boxes have been shown to be a source of please and encouragement for people who struggle to retain the memories of their lives.

So far, the results have been promising.

Tania Woodward and the aides filled up the boxes with the help of the resident’s families and hung them next to the door of each room.

As the residents get to see them and recognize the things inside, they will come to know where they live, which will have a special meaning for them.

Thanks for helping to purchase these boxes,  they are already prompting mental and emotional stimulation, they also help the residents reflect on their past and remember the people, pets, and places of their lives.

More and more some psychologists are coming to believe that with the proper tools and environment some people with dementia can recover

some memory, a great comfort to them and their families.

  1. This is a wonderful idea. Maybe those boxes will jog some memories and spark some conversations among the residents. Those boxes are unique and truly special. I hope they help!

  2. Mark, I work with dementia patients all the time, and a half dozen psychologists have said that some memories have been recovered, and I have seen that happen. I’m not sure what part of that is irresponsible, but I feel very good about it and will say it as often as I can to encourage people not to give up on memory. Sorry if that offends you, but not very.

  3. I wonder what you and Maria would put in your memory boxes? I am not sure about mine. I will need to think about it for awhile.

    1. I was just wondering that too..and what my husband & I would put in ours. I love how your posts can start our minds working in different directions than the every day drudgery,Jon. I think it helps all of us stay young to some degree.
