Sun And Cold: Memory Care Morning

by Jon Katz

We woke up to a beautiful sky and a return to cold – not frigid – weather, fitting for mid-February.

Still, as a photographer, I’m sensitive to changes in the light, and a Spring light is here; I can tell by the sun’s angle and the way the camera reacts to it.

In one sense, photography is technical; in the other, it’s all about light and knowing where the sun hasn’t changed.

Spring is not far away. Our new generator is at the ready, waiting to get to work. I’m glad we have it and hope we don’t need it.

This morning, the whole family is going to the Mansion’s Memory Care Center – Maria, Zinnia. They are putting up the shadow boxes in front of every room to connect the residents to the room where they sleep and live.

Maria will do some art, and I plan to take portraits of the residents; they have beautiful faces with great character. The Leica is coming along; I guess she’s part of the family now.

I’m going to be handing out Amish necklaces to the portrait subjects. I’m learning that everyone in the Mansion loves necklaces with color in them.

Yesterday I went to our food co-op and bought some steel-cut oats, which we are having for breakfast this morning. I’ve been reading recipes and ideas for cooking these oats and am excited to see how it goes.

  1. I have steel cut oats every morning. At least once a week I make up a quart of overnight oats for breakfast during my week. I put 1½ cups of oats and a sweetener in a quart container, then fill it with unsweetened soy milk. Stir to mix, then refrigerate. No need to cook. In the morning I scoop out the desired amount and heat in the microwave. I add a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice for a nice flavor.

  2. My friend’s mother was in a facility that had the boxes. It was so wonderful to walk in the halls and look at them. The pictures of men in uniform, wedding pictures, children; it reminded you of the person who still lives inside even though all we could see was the Alzheimers.
