My “books” signs hang on the back porch. It’s one of my oldest possessions. I bought it at an antique dealer, along with a wooden sign that said “worms.”
I hung up the worms sign on the porch of the first farm in Hebron. Every day, people pulled in the driveway asking to buy worms so they could fish.
When I told them the sign was old and decoration now, they often got angry, as if I was cheating them out of their bait. So I took the worms sign down ad got out the “books,” a fitting decoration for a writer.
No one has ever stopped to ask how they could buy a book. I guess there’s a lesson in there; I don’t quite know what it is yet. I love the sound of these old and beautiful chimes. I can’t recall where I got them; a lot of time has passed since I hung them up.
I also have a “heal” sign on my porch, but that is not an old sign; Maria painted it in advance of one of our Open Houses. That’s memory also.
