Robin In Brooklyn. Finding Light In The Darkness

by Jon Katz

My granddaughter  Robin climbed to the top of a mountain in downtown Brooklyn this afternoon; I love that she and Emma have fun in almost every situation.

Robin is a pandemic child and has lived her life in this strange and disruptive time. Much of her school year has been spent in a virtual classroom.

But Emma makes sure that her life is full of fun and adventure. I like to think I was as good a parent as that, but am not so sure.

Emna’s a wonderful parent, and she’s raising a wonderful kid. I might be able to see her again in the Spring if the pandemic holds up.

  1. “Pandemic child” is such a mysterious term. My granddaughter Ari is one too, She was born just at the start of the pandemic, and now she’s 2 years old, talking up a storm, and super happy. She’s never attended her day care without wearing a face mask. Her big sister is 5 and acclimated to masks just as well. She likes to recite the safety guidelines, like wash your hands and cover your cough. We’re so lucky they and their mom live with us. Strange times, but what is any time but a puzzle wrapped in a mastery, shrouded in enigma.

  2. An “Everest” grows in Brooklyn…. Looks like she’s having fun! Challenges faced in play (temperature discomfort, daunting scale disparity, physical exertion) serve well into adulthood that the reward of the pinnacle is worth it!

  3. The joys of childhood! You can see the happiness and pride in Robins eyes! It is fun watching Robin grow through your blog. Thank you for taking us along! Stay warm!
