Mid Week: Hypothermia, Big Storm Coming, Zinnia’s Bed, Wonderful Mattress, Maria’s Birthday Is Friday

by Jon Katz

Fate rarely is still long enough for me to get a good portrait, but she hopped up on the football this morning and just stared me in the eye. I don’t know if she wanted a hug or thought I was a sheep. I liked the shot, though.

We loved our new mattress last night; it was almost shockingly comfortable, a bit soft, a bit firm. It felt great; we made a good choice with the Casper mattress, even though it was one of the most expensive ones we came across. It was worth it.

Our old mattress, which was hauled off to the dump, lumps and all,  lasted a decade, but we paid for it in back pains and stiffness, none of which I felt this morning.

This new mattress is a big deal. I’m glad I got a good one, and thanks to Good Housekeeping for its comprehensive and honest review of the Casper.

Yesterday, I learned to take the cold more seriously.

I got a stiff case of hypothermia, and today it’s even colder, and I feel it still. I’m staying inside for most of the day; I might run out for a photo session briefly after lunch. But I still feel weak and freezing inside. I’ll try to stay warm and quiet. My temperature is still pretty low.

This weekend is shaping up to be a mess. A huge nor-easter headed our way, and heavy snow, high winds, and subzero temperatures were in the forecast. We might get to use our new generator.

The donkeys and sheep get grain, 2nd cut hay and warm water. We can’t do much more than that for them. They are all in good shape.

Maybe the storm will drift off into the ocean. I’m dressed in several layers of shirts and drink a lot of hot tea. I won’t be of much help to Maria, but she says she isn’t worried.

Friday is Maria’s birthday; I’m taking her to a museum, Mass Moca in Massachusetts; I bought her a tea warmer for her studio, a Sake set with four small glasses, and a hooded sweater/shirt, the kind she loves but would never buy for herself.

The heated indoor cat house for Minnie and Flo is coming today or tomorrow. Zinnia’s new dog bed is coming on Friday. We are working hard to keep everyone here warm and comfortable.

  4. so glad everyone has a new bed either functioning currently, or on it’s way! By the way, your bed is absolutely gorgeous. Is it mahogany? It’s quite old…..and has so much character……happy your new mattress is to your liking! I’m *almost* on pins and needles waiting to hear how Minnie and Flo will like their new heated house! Do tell, after you get it set up, please!
