The Snow Dog Had Her Check-Up

by Jon Katz

Nothing makes Zinnia happier in frigid weather than to roll around on the ice and snow, and then jump into a nearly frozen pond. We’re starting to call her a little canine polar bear. She never gets cold or wants to get in the house when it’s snowing.

This morning we went to the vet for her annual check-up, vaccinations, and heartworm pills. Dr. Fariello says she looks great, is 100 percent healthy, and is a pleasure to work with. We also got our heart room pills for Bud and Fate, three each.

The bill was $348. I thanked Dr. Fariello for keeping our dogs healthy. When we got home, Zinnia rushed out finish the job of rolling on the ice.

  1. We had a Lab that also loved the snow. We would walk on the paved road and she would be on the side, plunging in and out of the large drifts. Always with a joyful smile!

  2. You do know Heartgard is not a preventative. It kills microfilaria from infected mosquitoes. So needs to be given 6 weeks after mosquitoes return and is still good given every 6 weeks during mosquito season. Just trying to reduce poisons we give our dogs.

    1. Eliza, thanks for your message. As a policy, I don’t discuss medical issues or concerns with anyone but our vet. Nothing personal, but I can’t make good decisions with people I don’t know. It’s just me. I’m sure your right, but I have a great vet and I follow her advice.
