Our Two Most Wonderful Trees. “A Tree Gives Glory To God By Being A Tree…”

by Jon Katz

“A tree says: My strength is trust. I know nothing about my fathers, I know nothing about the thousand children that every year spring out of me. I live out the secret of my seed to the very end, and I care for nothing else. I trust that God is in me. I trust that my labor is holy. Out of this trust, I live.”   – Herman Hesse.

“A tree gives glory to God by being a tree. For in being what God means it to be it is obeying God. It “consents,” so to speak, to God’s creative love. It is expressing an idea which is in God and which is not distinct from the essence of God, and therefore a tree imitates God by being a tree.”   — Thomas Merton.

  1. Have you read The Overstory by Richard Powers? Incredible read some dear friends gifted me at Christmas. Really makes you view trees in a whole new light

  2. I’m not fond of winter but I love to look at the “naked” trees. Seeing the stricture of their skeletons is amazing.
