Reflections In Two Farm House Windows And A Fish Tank. One Room, Two Lamps

by Jon Katz

I’ve been going on about my Leica and how much I love it, but I have neglected my other more popular, but the sometimes unheralded magnificent camera, the one in my new Iphone Pro Max 13.

It did such a good job capturing the beautiful reflections all around me as I meditated. It’s one thing the Leica could not do.

I took the first one just as the sun went down, and the South window reflected the lamp and plants across the room.

The second was taken off of my fish tank, and the third was taken as the sunset behind me and the table lamp next to me.

The images are reflections of two different lamps..

I believe my beautiful old farmhouse – there is nothing like them – was talking to me.

It is the best color camera I have yet owned, including my beloved Canon. The color on the Iphone is marvelous, the camera improves with every new phone. The color and depth of field are remarkable.

Today was below zero all day, and I went out two or three times for farm and other chores and could hardly bear being outside. It was draining and exhausting. This kind of weather undoes me.

All of this beauty, right around me, every single day the sun is out. But today is the first time I saw it. I am learning what happens when I open up my heart and my soul to the world.

I was very happy to come into the house for my Silent Hour, around 3:30 every afternoon. The wood stove fire was roaring and warm. I made myself a cup of tea and grabbed a book, my earphones, and a blanket.

I listened to some music, saw the shadows of the sun going down in the hill behind me reflected in the walls around me, and I looked up and saw several magnificent reflections – one in the fish tank, one in the window behind me, one on my right.

Had I not stopped to contemplate and meditate and read and listen to some music (maybe to take a short nap), I would not have noticed the beauty all around me. Most days I didn’t.

And I give my Iphone camera credit, it didn’t fail me. Beauty is everywhere if I open my eyes and heart to it.

I love old farmhouses, and I sincerely believe the old windows and the old glass have the ability to capture beautiful reflections that I never see in newer homes or windows.

I could be imagining this, but the many e-mail friends I have who live in old farmhouses will, I think back me up. There are spirits here.

Maria and I painted this wall two weeks after we moved into the house. The lamp reflected is off to my right and behind me. Maria’s plants are lines up across the sill.
