When Emma was a child, I always made sure that there were dogs and cats in the house and that they were hers. When she had surgery, I had to give her two cats away for health reasons; she has never forgiven me.

I’m happy to see she’s continuing this tradition with Robin, my granddaughter. Sandy and Robin have grown up together; it’s an important relationship for Robin. They are always together when Robin is home, and Sandy comforts Robin when she needs comforting at night.

Emma loved her animals and took special care of them. As an only child, they were essential friends and companions for her at times.

They trust one another fully, and that is important too. These photos of the two of them together that Emma sends me are not just cute kid-animal photos; they are the story of two loving creatures who are growing up together.

Sandy is sweet and forgiving, the perfect dog for a young child.

Sandy is marking this passage in Robin’s life. She will also teach Robin about loss and death one day. There will be others following her.
