Storm Fizzles: Letter From Bill Dudley In Maryland. Soft And Gentle

by Jon Katz

The big storm is turning to rain and sleet, glad we’re not driving tonight; we expect to make it out to see the new movie Nightmare Alley tomorrow afternoon. We are debating (a kind word) whether to get Asian or Mexican food for lunch.

I’m happy with my soft and gentle message campaign.

I stay away from angry and hostile people, including the toxic parts of me. I’m sharing the beautiful messages I get instead of just posting the cruel ones. I get a lot of them, and thanks.

I’ve almost completely lost my appetite for arguing or striking back. I have a lush need for deleting and moving on. I think this is true for many people in our country.

Today’s very kind and uplifting letter was from  Bill Dudley, a simple but powerful handwritten note from rural Cumberland, Maryland.

Dear Jon, I want to say that I thoroughly enjoy your blog. By detailing your life, I have learned much. More importantly, you have helped me in my quest to become a better person. I have grown weary of all the conflicts our nation is going through.

I’m learning to disconnect from all that. I’m doing my best to do good deeds every day and leave the arguing and screaming to others.

You are an inspiration to many other people and me. Your truthful words and kind acts are what our country needs now. Enclosed is a check from your newest member of the Army Of Good. Please use it for whatever project you see fit.

Sincerely,  Bill Dudley.”

I am always a bit taken aback at the idea that I could inspire people, that is never what I did for most of my life, or set out to do, and I have to credit the concept mostly from the turmoil, anger, and fear that swept the country in 2016 and continues to discourage and frighten people.

My response was, as Bill sensed, to do good and leave the arguing and hatred to others.

The experience has left me with great faith in my country and the people who call themselves Americans and have not forgotten what it means. And we have done a great deal of good, more to come.

We are an honest and compassionate people; the Army Of Good speaks out loudly with that message. Thanks, Bill, for writing me. You humble me as well as lift my spirits.
