Cornstalks. Walking With Zinnia

by Jon Katz

Some of the cornfields in my county are so vast you can hardly see the end of them.

So far, our county is off the beaten track. There has been very little outside development which has saved the cornfields that feed the cows all winter. They call it silage.

Cornfields are elegaic; they tell us that farms still thrive here (some) and that we are still in the country. The fields are all b beautiful in their way, from planting, fertilizing, cutting, and harvesting.

They remind me I am not living in New York or Boston, or Los Angeles. I’ve been waiting for a few weeks to get this shot; the stalks had to be just right  and shiny from rain or cold. They tell us winter is just around the corner.

Zinnia comes along on all my walks on the hill, which was interrupted for some months while I rushed back and forth to and from doctors.

Zinnia is my walking companion. She is wonderful company for me.

  1. I have a small old rescue cat that knows how to get treats out of me, too.
Where did she come from? The old guy across the street
had, too many cats? Probably sat on his lap mooching corn chips and crackers, like she does with me. She lives for treats
now and a big warm cat to cuddle up with, inside only.
