Before The Storm

by Jon Katz

The wind has picked up on the farm, and the sheep and donkeys have taken to the pole barn. The barn cats are both warm and cry in the basement, where they will be for a while.

They know when to come in.

Bud hates the wind and panics when he hears it. He stays close to the woodstove. Zinnia and Fate don’t seem to listen to it. It’s supposed to be pretty wild tonight, with some chance of a power outage.

I can hear the howling across the pasture and the fields, a rare sound when there’s no blizzard.

It might be a good night photo in there somewhere.

Maria gave the animals some extra hay late this morning if it’s too messy for them to come out to the feeders. There’s a lot of rain forecast and cold temperatures, which means ice.

  1. Jon, I have followed you for at least 14 years. Sometimes I have been amazed by your caring your loving and generosity. Sometimes appalled at your insensitive comments. Most of all I stay because you are truly human and there for us all to learn from. How I wish I could sit down and truly meet you, but I must settle to be invited to YOUR blog where I am the guest not the one with the microphone. I continually will admie you and hopefully see my own humanity through yours. Bless you and thank you.

    1. Bless you, back, Barbara, you make me sound more interesting than I am, but thanks for it… I can only tell you that I am just a flawed human being, as yo you say, like most human beings. I’m not running for Saint. I’m good with it. Thank you.
