Dog Potholders, Vintage Fabric: Eleven For Sale On Maria’s Etsy Shop. $20 Plus $5 Shipping

by Jon Katz

Maria finished a labor of love today; she’s finished selling 11 dog potholders made from vintage fabric from a 1960 quilt. A follower of her work was good enough to send her—a sweet gift for Christmas.

The potholders are $20 apiece plus $5 shipping and are available now on Maria’s. Maria calls this one the white dog, we can’t figure out exactly which breed it is. You can see the potholders on Maria’s Full Moon Fiber Art Etsy Page.

Each potholder features a different dog. I don’t think Maria will ever give up making potholders; they have a strong emotional connection to her; they are the first things she made in her new studio at the first Bedlam Farm.

When she made the first ones, she told me she doubted anyone would buy them, but a decade later, she’s sold thousands of her potholders all over the country and much of the world, and she loves making them.

The potholders launched this phase of her art career and are unique to both of us. She’s very loyal to them. People often send her photos of the potholders in their new home. Some live in the kitchen, many hung as are pieces on the walls all over the house.

People send her beautiful old and vintage fabrics from their mothers and grandmothers. ( Maria Wulf, P.O. Box 205, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816 and thanks.) They often become potholders and return to the world.

She’s turned the humble potholder into an art form.

She only charged $9 apiece when she first made them and thought it was too high. She hates to raise the prices and does so very reluctantly; even as they become famous, she very much wants them to be affordable to people.

No matter how many quilts and hanging pieces she makes, the potholders are her fiber art children; she’ll never abandon them.

Tomorrow we go to Vermont early in the morning to pick up her Bedlam Farm yarn from the Vermont Knitting Mill. They’ll go up for sale in the next day or so, in time for Christmas.

You can see the dog potholders here and purchase one if you wish. I wouldn’t wait long. Woof.
