Portrait: Young Zinnia Comes Of Age

by Jon Katz

Zinnia is coming of age. She is growing out of her puppy stage – she was a big and goofy puppy – and heading into adolescence. We are devoted to one another, she follows me from room to room, rides with me in the car, and sleeps by my feet when I write.

I like to see we get the dog we need, and I needed Zinnia. She is a beautiful dog, full of love and joy and sweetness. Here therapy work is wonderful, and I love having her alongside of me as I go through life. It is beautiful to see her coming of age.

  1. My yellow lab, Chester, has just turned two and the maturation is noticeable just in the past couple of weeks. Dogs are fascinating things. Labs in general are so smart and intuitive, in addition to their basic fun-loving nature. My daughter was just home from college for Thanksgiving, and he was clearly so joyful to have his favorite girl back for a while. Otherwise it’s just him and me; I have Parkinson’s and I truly believe he has been the best medicine. I certainly wouldn’t be taking long walks on dark winter nights if he weren’t insisting with those big brown eyes. Our very best to you and Zinnia – she is gorgeous.
