Thinking With My Heart, Not My Head

by Jon Katz

Kristi wrote me this afternoon to say I was an inspiration to her because I was thinking with my heart and not with my head. That was a powerful insight into my life and emotions; I hadn’t seen it that way.

Warren wrote me to thank me for writing so honestly and clearly about my friendship with Moise.

I share some angry messages; I should share some of the many lovely ones. There are many good and generous people out there.

I think Kristi nailed it. I am learning to feel things, not just think them through in a way that can be cold and remote. My heart is opening up and asserting itself; my head backs off and lets me live.

Thinking with the heart is powerful and transformative. It changes everything and makes so many things possible. Thanks to both of you.

An angry message yesterday accused me of not liking criticism. I answered back: “Who do you know that likes criticism?” She did not reply.

The first message from Nancy, this evening: “It’s the best part of your real-time writing, Jon, the unfolding of what is beautiful, lovely, and sound. I’ve never commented on that before because, as so often is the case, the most profoundly appreciable is the ineffable.

  1. I believe that your writing is so powerful because it comes from your heart. Our heads have too many filters. Our egos live in our heads and keep us from feeling and seeing the truth.

  2. I do understand the reasons why you stopped the stream, but I miss the Millers. I appreciated the chance to learn about them without intruding in their lives. I was also happy to follow Jon’s journey as he built a new friendship.

SO I saved many posts from Jon’s “Miller Era”. I’ll read them again when I need a reminder of what authentic people are like.

On a parallel track, I’m still sharing your chapter on the Central Park carriages in “Talking to Animals”. I also have a small file of blog entries on the topic. Thanks for that, also.

    1. They’re not disappearing Emile, I’m sure they will pop up on the blog from time to time. The the relationship is not over, and I’m sure I will write about them at times…nobody in the family has asked me to never write about them… I wouldn’t take it too far…
