Images Of Bishop Maginn High School. A Remarkable Day For Good

by Jon Katz

(Lunch time at Bishop Maginn. Friends eating together.)

Maria and I went to Bishop Maginn High School together this morning. We spent most of the day there..

She taught students how to sew on a sewing machine.

I was helping teacher Sue Silverstein, and her very loving students put the Thanksgiving baskets together. I also interviewed a brave young student fighting Diabetes One.

It was a wild, chaotic and wonderful day. More good was going out that I could keep track of. It was a wonderful and exciting place for us to be; we will remember the day for a long time.

It was a good thing we left Zinnia behind; the school was chaotic, both lovingly and beautifully. I was touched by how hard these children worked to get these holiday baskets together for Thanksgiving.

There is a lot of hunger and need out there.

I’m good at breaking down boxes, and the basket bags were soon crammed full of food and gift certificates.

I think we got 50 baskets done today; some have already gone out to refugee families.

I have photos and words to share with you about one of the most meaningful days I can recall in my life, and Maria feels the same way.

I’ll write about that tonight, but I wanted to share a photo from a new series I’m doing: Images of Bishop Maginn High School.

I’m hoping to capture the feeling and vibes of this remarkable and unique learning place. It’s about the kids, and we don’t see them often enough. I want people to enjoy meeting them as much as I have; the place is chocked fool of heroes.

More later tonight. I’ve got a lot of photos to sort through. I’ve got some pizza to bring to the Amish wreath makers up in their dark and chilly barn.

The Afghan refugees have started coming by for their food baskets and books, but I’m not yet ready to photograph them.

It’s too soon; they need space to settle in.

Maria’s class is a fantastic success, it’s drawn boys and girls, and the kids are eager to make quilts for the refugees and pillows for their families.

We’ll both write about it tonight and tomorrow. She’s an amazing person.
