Cellar Door Latch. Ghosts Of The Craftsmen

by Jon Katz

There is more artistry and craftsmanship in some old farmhouses than exists in entire suburban communities in America. I love to look for the small touches of craftsmen in the woodwork and doors and windows.

This little latch opens the door to the cellar, it is no work of art, and is apparently readily available in hardware stores (according to my e-mail) but it is beautiful to me and Maria. And the kind of thing the Leica loves to photograph.

The old-timers said these latches were first made a long time ago. I love taking photos of latches and  old wood, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

  1. simple latch, but definitely photo worthy and a *thing* of the past when it comes to latches. I have also noted in a few of your photos…..a hanging crystal beauty in one of your windows that appears it might be a crystal doorknob from SO long ago……..is that what it is? Again…..a beautiful echo from the past
