Beauty-Sharing: Two Images Of Dusk In November. Color and Black And White

by Jon Katz

There are two times of the day where I never leave the house without a camera – early morning and late afternoon.

The sky explodes then, clouds dance their wild dance for reasons I don’t understand, and the sun hits the ground at all sorts of striking and different and beautiful angles. Photographer’s light.

Sometimes I’m rewarded, sometimes I’m disappointed. I’m patient, I am rarely disappointed. If I’m in a hurry, I always am.

I was rewarded today.

Two images. One, the farm at dusk in color, the other the same image in black and white. The one you like depends on who you are and reveals you.

  1. normally, I opt for, and enjoy the black and white……but this time, color gets it! Beautiful either way! Not sure what that reveals about me…..but ………..I think it may reveal more about you and your photography!

    1. Every picture we take reveals something about us, Susan, but when all is said and done, its just a picture. I like each of them for different reasons, I love the black and white silhouette, but the color is very striking. I’m not sure it says anything more than that.

      1. Jon…
With the first picture, I celebrate my perception of color. I agree, not sure it says anything more than that. But in serious photo reconnaissance interpretation, visual information matters. I’ll bet color says more there.

A question regarding the BW picture: MS-Word has rudimentary picture correction capabilities for pasted-in pics. When I pasted and tried to lighten the BW picture, the tree shadows that appeared in the color picture were missing. Did your BW original contain shadows?

  2. Never noticed before, but I think you have the basic primary colors in your buildings: red barn, yellow studio and now blue house! Outstanding 🙂

  3. Like Susan, I usually go for the drama of black and white, but this shot in color is striking for sure. Thanks for the peeks!

  4. In November I’m desperately holding onto COLOUR! The long, dark days of black and white will be upon us soon enough. Give me COLOUR!!!

  5. I have always loved the starkness of winter trees, as it reveals their artistry in a landscape. While the color is beautiful in the first one — yes, striking — it’s the black and white for me this time.

  6. Both are beautiful photos. The black and white is my pick, the trees emit the feelings of courage, courage to stand naked against the coming of dark winter days, knowing deep inside lies the birth of spring. This picture makes me feel strong and hopeful. Thank you!
