I love taking pictures of the Miller’s clothesline. There is something creative and artistic about it – the colors, the way they are hung, the striking and meticulous backdrop.
In a sense, it’s a gift that they don’t wish to be photographed; it forces me to look at their world and see the very natural and simple beauty in it.
When I met the Miller family, I wasn’t sure what to expect; I was surprised by their intuitive creativity and sense of form, almost like abstract art built into nearly everything they do – their barn, the rows of vegetables, and fruit.
This is art in the form of clotheslines, and I look forward to it every week. One day, an image of an Amish clothesline will be in MOMA in New York City.
