22 October

Three Images. Dusk, Cont. Fall Light, The Softest Light, Photographer’s Light

by Jon Katz

I took my second walk in weeks today, also at dusk. Tomorrow I can take a shower for the first time in a month or so. And next Wednesday, I can walk in my regular shoes. Last night, I slept on and off for seven hours with my apnea mask.

Life is beginning to return to its usual shape, it’s beginning to feel normal.

Maria is starting to ask pointedly when I will start making dinner again, I tried saying I needed more time to heal, but it didn’t fly far.

She and I and Zinnia went out as the sun fell over the hills to sit together. It was too cold to stay too long, but I loved the image of her and also of Zinnia.

When she got up to leave, I took out the Leica and took a shot of the shadows. We love sitting quietly together.

This is October light, the slanting light, the light of Tuscany, photographers’ light; I’m gathering my strength and creativity for winter.

It’s impossible to avoid the shadows, so I leave them in the photograph.  I can call it a self-portrait.

We love our farm; we love our quiet, shaded, private corner of the yard where we can sit out and look at the beautiful valley and the hill’s off in the distance. Zinnia loves to come along and sit.

Dusk is all about shadows; our trees know what to do.
