Tina By The Road

by Jon Katz

Tina moves where the Miller family moves. Today, the family was out in force helping Moise pour concrete. They were 10 or 20 yards up the hill from her. She was just out of the worst of the noise.

The machine was making a loud noise, so Tina moved to the bottom of the hill, just by the road, to keep an eye on things.

Whenever one of the children yelled out or moved, she was up the hill in a flash. She came running up to greet me and jumped into my car for a few minutes; we watched the concrete pouring together.

She kept me company.

Then, when I was ready to go, she jumped out. All the while, she never took her eyes off the children and grandchildren. I watched her for a few minutes as she returned to her post by the road.

She never glanced at the highway or seemed to notice it, even though she was just a few feet from it. The Miller family is her world; there is nothing beyond it.
