Four Steps: Preparing The New Raised Garden Bed. A Great Feeling. (Four Photos)

by Jon Katz

This is as far as we got preparing the new bed this morning; we’re heading out to the movies. It’s a delicious mix, learned over years of planting gardens for vegetables and flowers – we use old flower pots, twigs, chicken droppings ,old hay,  donkey manure, and topsoil. These flowers will fly to the moon.

First, we lined the bottom of the cart with flower pots, old hay, and chicken manure.

Secondly, we put in two layers of donkey manure and then two layers of topsoil. I’ll need to get more soil.

We’ll let this brew settle for a while and then put more manure and, finally, a top layer of topsoil. The twigs are a new idea at the bottom for ventilation, and so the bed can drain. The Amish builders left space between the slats at the bottom.

Finally,  we’ll cover the bed with cardboard and perhaps a tarp and let this brew mix and settle over the winter. Everything about this bed will be fun and is already. By June, I’ll be the Johnny Flowerseed of the area, passing out bouquets.

  1. Beautiful. I love the layer of cardboard which I have heard called lasagna gardening. Zinnia looks like a great helper.

  2. I love the idea of using old clay pots in the bottom to help with drainage and probably to take up a bit of room so you don’t need to add so much manure and topsoil. Clever!

  3. You guys are just wonderful! Maria is such a hard worker (and it’s obvious, she loves it). It will be wonderful to see the resulting beautiful flowers next spring! (And both Zinnia and Fate make great cheerleaders!)
