My World: Busy Bee

by Jon Katz

I think I know this bee; I’ve stepped out onto the back porch to visit the marigold flowers in my current confined state. The same bee is in the same bloom every day. It may be more than one bee, but we have gotten comfortable with one another. If I come out early in the morning, he’s frozen to a flower and immobile.

He no longer buzzes off when he sees me. He let me get within a few inches of him today, and I got the shot I wanted for much of the week. One day soon, he’ll be gone, and I am unlikely ever to see him again.

He did well with the marigolds, though; perhaps the pollen will help get him through the winter if he’s that kind of bee. I’ll ask Maria.

  1. He looks like a carpenter bee. They are amazing insects and far better pollinators than the honey bee. They do not make honey but the pollen is put into their nests to feed their hatchlings which are in tunnels burrowed into wood or in hollow straws. Glad you are on the mend and thanks for all your photos and posts.
