Dinner With Dracula’s Candle Holder, I Had To Bring It Home, Maybe It Escaped From Downtown Abbey

by Jon Katz

I called it dinner with Dracula and fell in love with it right. Whenever I walk into the Shining Sisters shop,  magical antique and restoration business, I see some old thing I have. In this case, it was an old candle holder; we don’t know how old; I said it would be like having dinner with Dracula.

Leslie always has some amazing old thing she is restoring and bringing back to life. This one belongs on our dining room table. It’s so strange and not a farmhouse piece, that we both loved the idea of it.

I bought it along with a sterling silver toe ring for Maria and belly dancing.

We won’t put the candle holder between us for dinner, but I couldn’t resist this shot of Maria peering out of the other side.

Years ago, our quarters had plenty of extra space. We could serendipitously accumulate items from second-hand stores, flea markets, or garage sales, and store them until an occasion arose.

But eventually we would relocate, and the day of judgement for those items would arrive.

When we decided to downsize our current living space, room for such items disappeared. With that loss went the transient satisfaction of finding hidden treasure, discovering a well-worn gift for another, or just striking a good deal.

A survivor from those times came from a rural Texas flea market. It is a handheld oil lamp that was refitted for electricity. I’ve had it for about 40 years, and it still works!
