Black And White And Color /The Shadow Of The White Birch

by Jon Katz

I consider the old white birch on the lawn the very soul of Bedlam Farm and I took a photo of it in color and black and white, both are here.

I’m continuing my photo experiment: posting color and black and white images of the same thing, in this case, the deep afternoon shadow of the old white birch, reading out to caress the farm and wish it a good night.

I love the images of the shadows hugging the spirit of the farm, wrapping itself around it, a good fairy, a friendly spirit.

Maria favors the black and white, the Leica image.

So do I. It has more character.

They say if you want to capture the soul of something, use black and white. You should, of course, make up your own mind. Everyone is right in the way that they see it. There is no right or wrong.

  1. For me the black and white is more compelling. The color photo has a friendly vibe but the B&W feels sinister – like those trees in The Lord of the Rings
