Artist At Work

by Jon Katz

Maria and I work in different spaces in different buildings. We rarely visit the other where they work; we meet in the house or the pasture or the yard. Each of us needs to have our own workspace and mind space.

Once in a while, I stick my head in to see what’s going on. This is acceptable to both of us. There is always something new in one place or the other. Today, I saw Maria had begun a new quilt, and I poked my head to take a peek.

I could see it at her feet.

I love to see the beginning of a new quilt and then compare it with what I see when it’s finished. She sees things I don’t see. This new one looks colorful and different.

Maria was deep in thought, pondering the next fabric or an adjustment to the existing one. I love watching her work; she has this amazing ability to see far ahead. I don’t have that; I live almost totally in the now.
