We discovered a vulnerable Wolf Spider mother sitting on a wooden crate right next to the back door this morning. She was sitting on a fat stack of eggs, and I suspect one of the chickens had already pecked off one of her legs.
At Bedlam Farm, that can’t stand.
Maria constructed a rescue station for her on a green chair and surrounded it with potted plants. She went out to do some chores, and I was haunted by the idea of one of the four hens had taken that leg, and would come back for the rest of her.
I picked up the chair with the Wolf Spider mom and put it on top of the table on the back porch. It’s too high for a chicken to get up there and there’s no room for a cat to jump up. Mother spider is staying loyal to her eggs, and we’ll stay loyal to her. I sometimes think Maria has ruined me.

That last line is gold!
