Another Amish Building Goes Up, The Roof Is Tomorrow

by Jon Katz

Another Amish building is going up quickly. Tomorrow, Amish workers from all over the Northeast will again descend on Cambridge, they’ll be coming from upstate New York, Iowa, and Pennsylvania.

The workers are building a workshop for Moise’s son-in-law Eli and daughter Katie Ann. Tomorrow, they’ll raise the roof. Katie Ann lives just a few miles from Moise, on a beautiful hillside with lots of green pasture.

The Amish are transforming the landscape of our quiet little town. Already, six families have taken over farms and brought them back to life with horses, cows, chickens, and crops.

And with the sound of hammers putting nails into walls and roofs.

Wherever the Amish go, they build barns and houses and sheds and workstations.

Moise was working there today, as he has all week with two of his sons, who saw and hammer,  and three of his daughters, who bring and prepare meals.

Everyone has a job, everyone.

No one knows how many are coming. The Amish teach mutual aid, when people need help they ask for it, and they get it. I’ll try to be there tomorrow morning when the roof goes up.

    1. It’s the same as sit means to everybody else, a place to hold machinery and supplies (and maybe horses) I’ve heard it used many times.
