Reading Hour At The Mansion. Wolves, Donkeys, Sleep

by Jon Katz

Today, Maria and Zinnia came along with me for my weekly reading hour at the Mansion Assisted Care Facility. It was a sweet hour.

I read two stories – one about a wolf who wished to be liked, and a second was from the Winky Wonky Donkey, the resident’s favorite book.

Maria read a short story from my book “Dancing Dogs.” The story was about barn cats, and I loved hearing it; it’s the first time I ever listened to it.

I distributed three Amish bracelets; they are much in demand at the Mansion, the aides and residents are both wearing them.

I have grown fond of Clara,  new to the Mansion. She wears her Amish bracelet everywhere and attends every one of my readings and every meditation class. She has the sweetest smile.

By the end of the hour, every single resident but one was sound asleep. At first, this unnerved me; I thought my reading must be boring

.That is not the case. For the first half-hour, the residents listen carefully, eyes wide, laughing and commenting. But for most, it’s just too long to sit still in a warm room.

Sleeping is a sign that they have relaxed and trust where they are. I feel successful when they are so relaxed; that’s the point. I love my reading hour. They all love Maria and are very happy when she comes.

  1. These are such sweet-looking ladies. What a blessing that you all can go again and take Zinnia. I don’t wish to be there, but I envy their being able to interact with Zinnia like that. Wish I could. She is so precious.

  2. I always enjoy your Mansion resident photos, Jon. So much expression in those beautiful faces! And I’m glad to hear that you were perceptive enough to equate the residents nodding off…..to their being relaxed. Very astute of you and so much nicer than feeling as if you had been *boring*! I believe YOU make them happy and relaxed. Maria too, of course!

  3. I have been reading every Tuesday for 9 years, to a circle of residents at the local Aged care facility Jon. I was pleased to read your words “ Sleeping is a sign that they have relaxed and trust where they are. ” Sometimes, at the end of my hour there are only a few awake and listening. However I understand the hypnotic tones of someone reading is soothing and I’ve never minded.
