The Amish Strawberry Donut That Almost Ate New York

by Jon Katz

When I stopped in yesterday to bring some ice,  there was excitement in the Miller kitchen.

“Look at this,” Barbara said, showing me a giant strawberry donut that started out as an accident but grew to the size of a big fat grapefruit.

Lena brought me this huge thing on a tray.

Barbara gave it a Pennsylvania Dutch name, which I could neither understand nor remember. She asked if I wanted it. It was full of strawberry filling.

I thanked her but said if I ate that, I’d probably have a heart attack right there in the kitchen, and nobody needed that. We all laughed, but there might be truth to it.

Barbara said it was supposed to be smaller and rounder, but if I didn’t want it, they would sell it, and guess what? It was sold in 15 minutes.

Even the heavy rains didn’t keep donut lovers from Donut Friday and they were still baking fresh donuts into the early afternoon.

Jo carried the big donut in its own box down to the shed, asking me one more time if I wanted to take it home. Thanks again, I said, it wasn’t something a sane diabetic would eat.

They were all excited about the donut, which they charged $4 for. (A box of six donuts costs $6 dollars.)

The girls were studying their cookbooks and there was talk of apple dumplings, exotic fillings, pies, and mini-cakes. There are now some vegetables on their stand.

Donut Friday is a hit. I can’t say if Super Strawberry Donut will return on Friday, but if it’s there please don’t try to eat it all at once. This one nearly flew out of the farm.

The strawberry donuts are a hit. By late afternoon, there was only one box left. It will be gone by morning.
