A Surprise Birthday Present For Moise

by Jon Katz

I just learned that Moise’s birthday is coming up shortly. ( I know he’s a Leo, but not the exact date.)

I wondered what you give the man who has nothing in the way of material things and buys nothing for himself; I snuck up to the farm while Moise worked down by the shed and talked to Barbara and the girls.

I wasn’t sure if there might be some Amish prohibition against taking gifts from outsiders. It turns out there is not.

I suggested a durable tool belt to Barbara and the children.

He will be building a barn and a house in the next couple of months (and some barns and houses for other Amish people). He is always building something.

They all loved the idea, although it seemed new to them.

(I’m free to share it here because he never reads my blog, of course, unless he comes over here and asks me to go online., or I want to show him something.) Barbara says they will keep the secret.

How could he not use a tool belt? He’s doing carpentry work all day and much of the night.

I trawled through online sites and Amazon and found a good one, the best-reviewed and best-rated tool belt I could find. I wanted one that wasn’t showy, that was plain and businesslike.

I went down the shed where he was hammering something (he bends over each time for each nail) asked him his waist size and got suspicious, but I just shrugged and said I was curious.

I gave a printout to Barbara to give him tomorrow – the family all enthusiastically approved of the gift.

This is the best kind of gift to give – something a person needs but would never buy. Living with Maria has given me a lot of experience at choosing this kind of gift.

People like that get pissed off if you give them something frivolous, but not if it’s a work tool or something useful.

I’m grateful to Moise for coming here and admiring the courage and vision it took.  He has brightened and uplifted my life.

He’s a good man and a good father and friend.

And of course, we are both Leo’s, August’s babies. Big egos.

I can see him up on his ladder, reading in for nails and screwdrivers. People who work that much and that hard are entitled to some good tools.

They will tell him about a present coming tomorrow  (but not what it is).

It should arrive early next week.

  1. Great gift idea. They might start making them if they get the idea. Love great gifts. I give Amish quilts as gifts a lot, and Amish rockers. A tool belt is the thing.

    1. Hey thanks, I don’t have the exact and if I ask him he’ll get wise, but I know he’s a leo

    1. Yes, thanks Astrologist, I know he’s a Leo but I didn’t get the exact date, he laughed because it’s close to my birthday on Aug 8..If I ask him, he’ll get suspicious,…Barbara and I will figure it out..Thanks for telling me..

  2. Here is what my book says about people born on July 3rd. Observant, truthful, sensitive. Day of the commentator. July 3rd people uphold the rights of the common man or woman. Protective shells surround them like a little fort, protecting their sensitivity. Highly philosophical. Born on the 3, ruses to the highest position. Highly independent. So much the observer, my book says don’t be afraid to show others your inner life. This is a condensed version. On an odd note, my oldest brother died in a car accident in 1971, and Jim Morrison of the doors also died on that exact day. Same first name. Life can be odd with its twists and turns. I loooooovvvveer my book.
