Launching The Mansion Tablet Campaign. Five Tablets, Great Freedom

by Jon Katz

I’ve been researching this idea for several weeks now, and the Mansion has approved it, and our experiments have worked,  so I’m launching the Army Of Good Mansion Tablet Campaign.

I want to buy five residents the best, most reasonable, and highly regarded tablet now on the market, the Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet.

I can hardly think of a better or more useful gift for some of the residents.

The world has changed outside of the Mansion, but the residents are struggling to keep it up. More and more, I’m forced to decline people’s generous offer of old and used books.

The way the residents read and communicate and entertain themselves is changing.

The truth is that many of the Mansion residents can’t read paper books easily, and even large print books are a problem. They have very little space to store them.

The tablets have brightness and sizing options that make reading much easier. Some play games on tablets (or would like to), join online communities for the aging, track down their friends.

Like the rest of us, their world is going virtual and digital.

Many read e-books on cellphones, and I notice some have tablets given them by members of their family. Some have used the ones I’ve gotten for them and love them.

So I’m ready to bring anyone at the Mansion who wants to go into the 22nd century their own new tablet.

Sadly, there aren’t many who can use these machines right now. I actually wish more people could use them.

The experiment has been a great success for those who can; this is a technology many residents can learn and handle easily. It will change their lives.

They can listen to music on their tablets, watch movies, e-mail their grandchildren.

The devices also give them more control over the personal areas of their lives. There will always be group activities, but some residents yearn to control their own communications and entertainment at times.

I want to give everyone at the Mansion who would like a tablet and can’t afford one new, inexpensive one. Highly rated Amazon Fire HD 10″ tablets, reviewer after reviewer, says these are the best tablet value on the Internet right now.

I researched about eight different tablets. This was by far the best device and the best price. These will help .to ease the isolation and frustration of the extreme elderly greatly.

The brand new models cost $148.8 each; I think this is the best choice for the Mansion people. They are full HD tablets with Wi-Fi and 32 GM of space.

If I move quickly I might be able to get the tablets for $124 each.

I want to start on a small scale, as always. And really, there is no choice.

We are canvassing all of the residents to see who wants one and make sure they are comfortable using them

. The aides and I can provide tech support in terms of getting them started.

So I’m starting with the residents who very much want a tablet, and we’ll take it from there.

We’ve identified five residents – Julie, James, Ruth, Charles as Mansion residents who could greatly benefit from a tablet. I know there won’t be many more.

With chords and cables and cases and some stands,  screen protectors, etc., the tablets will cost about $900 altogether.

If you wish to contribute, you can donate via Paypal, [email protected], or Venmo, [email protected]. I don’t want to wipe out the Mansion fund again, so I’m asking for some help.

You can also contribute by check, Jon Katz, Mansion Fund/Tablets, P.O.  Box 205, Cambridge, NY., 12816.

If there is an overage of donations, I will add it to the Mansion Fund (believe me, we can use it) or apply it to future purchases of technology that helps ease the lives of the residents.

We will need to replace air conditioners, cell phones, small TVs in some cases.

Thanks so much; I’ve wanted to do this for a long time but waited until the pandemic eased. It’s time, with your help.

  1. You missed the prime day sale if you didn’t know about it. The tablet was $79.99 during Amazon’s prime day. I was going to buy a new one (it would have been my 5th kindle fire tablet) but I told myself to wait for next prime day or Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

    1. Karen, I’m happy you have the flexibility to shop around Amazon’s bargain days. On Prime Day,I bought a lot of clothes and art supplies for the Mansion. At the time, I had no approval for the tablet idea, nor did I have the funds, nor had we assessed how many we might need. That’s why I asked for support today.

  2. I use the very same tablet, I started with he 7″ years ago, but my eyes got to where I needed the larger print. I love my Tablet. I donated to your cause!
