Home Improvement, Two: My First Ever Garden Comes To Life

by Jon Katz

My raised bed  Zinnia garden, the first solo garden planting of my life, is a joy and a pleasure. I check it three times a day, water it twice, patrol it for weeds or debris brought in by the wind.

This summer, the garden will provide fresh flowers for the inside of the farmhouse. I’ve learned a lot from this garden, and plan on adding a second bed next summer Not sure what flowers to plant.

A small thing, a big thing. I’m learning how it is possible to love a garden as a child of the earth.

  1. Just a thought – I am really enjoying the 3 kinds of Coreopsis in my garden. They bloom (yellow) all summer and the insects love them. What colors do you want in your garden?

    1. I’ve had a Moonbeam Coreopsis in my garden for years, and it has never bloomed like it’s doing this year. It’s just glorious with all that cheery yellow.
