Lena’s Amish Quilt

by Jon Katz

We got our first look at Lena’s quilt yesterday; it is quite beautiful. When Amish girls reach the age of 21, their families join in making three quilts for them.

In Amish culture, children are free to leave home when they are 21. If they choose to stay, then they must be paid for the work they do. The quilts are a declaration of life and connection.

Lena plans to stay on the farm for a while, she says she doesn’t know if she will get married or when.

Maria has been talking with Lena about quilting; the two are on their way to a lovely friendship. A lot of you have asked me for a better look, and Lena was happy to oblige.

  1. Their work is exquisite! We have Amish and Mennonite in my hometown in Upstate NY and their quilts are auctioned and can go for several thousand dollars!

  2. Quality stitching in quilts requires a minimum of 10 hand, EVEN stitches per inch. Often Italian fabrics. Our quilts adorn museums internationally, the WhiteHouse, more.
