Meet Nancy, Moise’s New Gift To The Kids

by Jon Katz

Moise went to the livestock auction last night and bought a goat for his kids. She cost $100 and he means for the goat to be a pet. I said hello, she is a sweet thing.

Moise invited me to my first House and Barn Raising, and I got there before noon. I’m going to write about it later tonight, it was a rewarding day for me.

He was pleased to see me and dragged me into the woods to show me the well he managed to dig yesterday when he had a few minutes to spare.

I just rushed out there to warn him of an impending severe thunderstorm and possible tornado. He took the news calmly, I just couldn’t handle the idea of him and all those nephews and friends out in the open field – he’s building a temporary home for his daughter Katy Ann, who’s arriving in a couple of weeks – and caught in a storm.

I see I better get offline and turn the computer off. Hopefully, we’ll have power tonight and I’ll get back to you..jon

  1. What is the Amish stance on pets? Dogs, cats, goats? No criticism here. Just a bit confused by different things I have read.

    1. I can’t speak to what you have read Ann, and I’ve written about this a dozen times in my pieces on the blog. I’d suggest you go back a couple of weeks to get a full answer to your question. My Amish neighbors treat their animals lovingly and well, they have never run a puppy mill, they own Tina a rescue dog they adore, their horses are healthy and strong and well cared for, and Moise just bought a baby goat as a present for his kids. She is a pet. Some Amish in some places have been accused of abusing their animals and running puppy mills. That does not happen here in the families I know. Their animal’s ar are much loved, are all named, and are strong and healthy. That’s what I’ve seen.

      1. Thank you John. I have read how you said they are well treated and believe you. Just wasn’t sure if they had true pets or if everything needed to have a job. Since the baby goat is a pet, that answers my question. Thanks.

        1. I understand, they have a different idea of pets than we do, but they definitely have animals for the purpose of loving them, even if they don’t work..I was surprised also..
