Amish Daughter Watering. They Will Persevere.

by Jon Katz

I came across another iconic Amish photograph today, this one of a young daughter at the Miller Farm going out in 90 plus degree heat to water some young plants.

Because I won’t photograph their faces, the Amish take on an air of mystery, especially the women in the bonnets and hats and capes.

I don’t know who she was, she far away, but the photograph struck me as beautiful. She was bending over to water a plant. In this heatwave, the soil is dry.

But they all insist every plant and seed will prosper and live.  I believe them.

It captures the hard and never-ending work Amish women do. at almost every age.

To me, these photographs are a testament to that work. The anonymity gives the picture dignity and mystery – and power.

  1. Even though we have known and worked with many Amish for over 30 years I am still enjoying these posts so much and the photos are outstanding. I love their work ethics and their beliefs. They make you want to be a better person.

  2. Entitled on so many levels:
    unsympatheticc view that lacks empathy.

It’s better not to romanticize their domination.

    cf.,
“Several intersecting social constraints operate to prevent them from developing assertive attitudes, defiant behaviors, and collective actions. In reaction to these constraints, the women develop unique strategies to covertly resist and pragmatically adapt”

    1. Barbara, I don’t really have any idea what you are talking about, you are too busy being imperious. We all can find links for any point of view in the world, I pay them no mind. It’s better, to be honest about what I feel and see, not what you think I should feel and see. I’m fond of thinking for myself, and don’t like to hide behind links and studies.

It is better not to demonize their domination. What, I wonder, do “unique strategies mean.” Do you have some in your life? Are you perchance, another academic? Your writing has a patronizing, not persuasive tone to it. You make it too easy to ignore you.

  3. Good grief, Barbara! That journal article is about immigrant Chinese women. That is hardly an apt comparison, plus you sound like an academic snob. If you have read anything about Jon’s writing, you would realize that you are the people who give higher education a bad name. What was your point? To burst Jon’s (and his reader’s) balloon about the lovely Amish? Jon is not some naïve fool–I’m sure as a professional news reporter he can spot a phony a mile away (hint, hint).
