Plain People, Clean People, Busy People

by Jon Katz

For people who live around horses and have no electricity, I feel compelled to point out how clean their farmland and barns and living quarters and kitchens are.

They are pretty clean themselves as well. Giving up modern conveniences doesn’t mean giving up personal hygiene. The kitchens are clean enough to eat off of the floor, so are their living quarters.

They are constantly wiped brushed, mopped, and swept. Mondays are laundry days, Fridays’ are sheet and blanket days.

In the summer, all the girls go barefoot, but they are all spotless, just like their floors and the grounds around their homes and barns and their carriage horses.

We clean our farm once a week, but I’m not sure it has ever been as clean as their kitchen, windows,  and the big stoves inside.

  1. Thank you for all of your fine observations Jon. From all modern inventions , some seem particularly helpful in order to run a household, the wash machine ,the vacuum cleaner and the water heater. Growing in Belgium in the fifties I remember my mother heating the water for the laundry on a coal stove , it was hard labor . I imagine that is what the Amish people do but on a woodstove ?
