I see that Donut Friday is a hit at the Miller Farm, I stopped by at 8:30 to pick up some donuts to bring to the Mansion aides and Moise was scrambling to finish the woodshed in which donuts and pies, fruits and vegetables, will be sold.
Moise said the first batch of donuts were just about sold out and he asked me to drive up to the kitchen and tell Barbara and the girls to make some more.
Cars were pulling up one after the other while I was there.
Moise’s donuts have already become a regular event, some people are driving an hour to get them. I bought four boxes to take to the Mansion.
This morning, the whole family was working to help finish the shed and make enough donuts to last through the day. It’s exciting to see their dreams and hard work pay off.
I took the photo above on Tuesday when I went to visit Moise while he was plowing.
For Moise, plowing is a sacred ritual, an act of faith and connection with the earth.
How wonderful this must be for everyone. It seems a well and functional life, a worthy life. I know I’d love living in the midst of such lives.
So nice you have an interest in the Amish! They have one of the best lifestyles in the U.S. We have saddle mules and our farrier is Amish. The women can just do about anything.
Your stories about the Amish are both educational and interesting. We have a community of Amish north of us in Westminister and Volant, Pennsylvania. They come down and sell their pastries at all the local farmer’s markets in Beaver County. I never pass up their stand without buying a delicious fruit pie. They are employed by a lot of homeowners to build custom cabinetry and roofs, garages, sheds, barns. Their quilts, stitched by hand, are absolutely exquisite. They have been a blended part of our western Pennsylvania communities my entire life. I’ve always been in awe of their industriousness.
