There is nothing calmer or more calming on a beautiful Spring Day than sheep chewing their cuds and sitting out in the sun.
Merricat and Issachar, niece and uncle, are often together when the sheep are well fed, safe, and hunkered down to rest. It’s strange, but since Red died, and I have no working dog (Fate loves sheep, but doesn’t like to herd them), I’ve gotten closer to the sheep, and they to me.
For all those years, I always had a dog when I was in the pasture. The sheep aren’t afraid of Zinnia or Fate and so they are more at ease with me. Red was a commanding border collie, he took no nonsense from the sheep.
I’ve re-discovered the gentleness and peacefulness of sheep. I sat with them for a while yesterday outside the Pole Barn, it was a meditation in itself.
I feel that being around most animals is calming – their energy feels pure, for lack of a better word. No agenda from them, except maybe “feed me.” They do seek our affection, which is also rather pure-feeling.
Great photo!
